1. Write the process grade before you write the INCI

Job A is a refined cosmetic oil: lighter colour, quieter odour, fewer gums, a filtration story that a pale cream can survive. Job B is an unrefined or cold-pressed lot: more pigment, more seed smell, more material that will haze a filter or tint a white emulsion. Those jobs do not share a brief because both bottles say ‘jojoba’ or ‘argan.’ Browse base oils and butters as lots with a process sentence, not as interchangeable moisture. If marketing already printed ‘golden cold-pressed’ on a white day cream, purchasing must buy that object — or marketing must rewrite.

2. The file decides ‘golden’ versus ‘nearly water-white’

A liquid jojoba lot arrives as a wax ester with an appearance line. Some packs are sold as a clear, almost odourless cosmetic oil. Others keep a deeper gold and a seed note. Neither is morally better. If the TDS says pale and the drum arrived amber, that is a purchasing conversation — not a reason to ‘refine it on the bench’ with a coffee filter. If the TDS is silent on colour, you do not have a colour number. You have a question for the supplier before you promise a white cream.

What buyers say

Buyer experience with this exact Mylo-Opt product. Educational content stays primary — this is not scientific proof.

  • Bought this on a whim — I'd never used oils on their own. I already had creams with shea butter in the formula, so having the actual shea butter means I can add it wherever I want. That's still the plan; so far I've just put it on my lips overnight a couple of times.

  • Best shea butter I've had. The smell and texture are the familiar ones. What I really like is the fine granules — super easy to scoop from the jar. Didn't set off an allergy on my face and didn't clog pores. Hair was happy with it too. I'd get this again.

3. Colour and odour are specifications, not folklore about ‘real oil’

A short pack of argan oil is a useful teaching case because shops treat the gold as proof of authenticity. Gold can be the lot. Gold can also be oxidation, a different process grade, or a different harvest. Smell the retain against the new drum under the same light. A refined grade that smells quiet is not ‘dead oil.’ An unrefined grade that smells of nuts is not ‘more active.’ Both are lipids with a process history. Do not invent a tocopherol story to rescue a brief that wanted white and bought brown.

4. Filterability is a process cost, not a personality trait

Unrefined seed oils carry phospholipids and fines that look romantic in a bottle and expensive in a 5-micron bag. A grape-seed oil sold as a light cosmetic oil can still throw haze if the grade was never winterised or if you chilled an unrefined cut. If the cream must stay optically honest, buy the grade whose file allows that. Do not discover the cake after a weekend on the filter press and then blame the emulsifier.

5. An unrefined butter is a different object from a deodorised one

Unrefined shea butter is sold as a kilogram cosmetic butter with a smoke, a green-ivory tint, and a melt that still has to live with your emulsifier. That is a documented grade, not a lifestyle. If the brief is a nearly odourless body butter, a deodorised or refined shea is a different PO. Do not ‘fix’ unrefined shea by cooking it until the smell leaves — you are writing a new process and a new oxidation history. The rancidity page on this site starts after you already chose a grade and then abused it.

6. The emulsifier sheet still has to accept the grade you bought

A refined oil can still split a cream if the emulsifier, the hold, or the cool-down is wrong. An unrefined oil can still make an elegant cream if the brief expected colour and smell. Read emulsifier selection notes for the chassis, then write the oil grade as an input — not as a surprise in week two. Do not paste a storefront comparison into the batch sheet. Do not invent a hold temperature because a forum said cold-pressed ‘should not be heated.’ Heat what the emulsifier file requires; keep the oil no hotter and no longer than that job.

7. A one-line decision before the first weigh-up

Colour target. Odour target. Filter story. What the label will be allowed to say about ‘cold-pressed’ or ‘refined.’ Which retain you will keep: incoming drum, workshop bottle, finished fill. If any cell is empty, do not invent a percentage to fill it. Change the claim or change the grade. Peroxide complaints belong on the rancidity page after this decision is written. A category ‘pick an oil’ page is a different job. Today’s job is narrower: which process grade did this cream actually buy?
